Alabama Community Rally To
Fund Football Field Lighting Project For A Private Catholic High School!
Our client was a small Catholic High School in Alabama that needed a new
football lighting system.
Football
Field Lighting Project Challenges
Our client had no lights in their football field and could not play at
night. They had wanted to invest in football lighting for many years. The
biggest challenge they were facing was a limited budget. As a private school,
they had limited funding and had to get very creative when it came to planning,
requisitioning, and paying for football lighting poles and equipment.
A number of board members and
school affiliates networked throughout the community to put together a group of
supporters who could function as a design and installation team. Since many of
these individuals were licensed professionals, the first things they wanted to
know about the different options they looked at was detailed technical
information on those products and applications where they could best be
installed.
Many of the major lighting
firms whom they initially contacted were somewhat reluctant to share this type
of detailed information with the school board. They wanted to both design the
system and handle the installation of the equipment with their own team.
RLLD Commercial Lighting won
the bid because we were willing to both meet the client at the point of their
budget and to provide them with detailed conceptual and design services that
empowered the client to simply order their football field lights and install
them according to the plan we recommended.
Football Field Lighting
Design Considerations
The lighting system had to do a bit more than just light the football field.
There was an adjacent track that also had to be illuminated. Because this was a
small campus with an average of only 50 spectators attending the game, the
football field lights did not need to be as intense as those in larger arenas
and stadiums. They only had to produce sufficient illumination to light the game
and the track nearby.
This essentially constituted
Class 3 illumination requirements, with optics featuring a maximum to minimum
ratio as low as possible. We also had to consider the adjacent track and just
how many fixtures would have to be aimed at it to meet the desired luminance
levels.
Photometric Analysis
Software Helped Us Develop A Custom Skate Park Lighting System Unique To This
Challenging Environment
We first separated the lighting requirements for the football field from
those of the track to avoid any miscalculation of necessary foot candles. We did
a point-by-point analysis of both fields using CAD files sent to us by the
school. Based upon the number of spectators provided by the school—approximately
50 per game—we determined that the football field lights would perform optimally
at 25 foot candles. To safeguard against glare, we selected the appropriate
optics to distribute light evenly over the football field and the track.
Final Football Field
Lighting System Proposed
The final system proposed to and ultimately accepted by the client consisted
of 10 pole locations in total with 74 1500 watt metal halide sports lighting
fixtures. The school love the outcome, and thanked us repeatedly for letting
them finally play football at night for the first time in the history of their
institution.
