So where do you start to make heads and tails out of the mess. The first thing to do is to look for the big things in the way. Bikes, skies, golf club. Large items that are not easily stored on garage shelves. If you are doing this in one weekend, then pull that out into your driveway and start working toward one of the walls so that you can mount those large items in the driveway on the wall. There are many racking systems available for all of these larger items.

Make piles of like items as you go though the stacks of the mess. Hoses, shovels in one pile. Sporting equipment, bats balls, gloves in another. Maybe you choose to put your kids stuff in one side and your in the other. Don’t be afraid to put the stuff in the driveway or on the lawn to create an area where you can work.

As you sort items remember to ask you self how long has it been since you saw this item or how long has it been since you’ve used this. If the stuff is still go make donation box otherwise throw it away.

So now that the garage is sorted out on your lawn and you have of course swept the area clean. You can now start looking the task of putting out shelving or racks to hold the larger items on your lawn. There are many different types of bike racks, including ones that will go to the ceiling. There are heavy lifts that allow for you to put some of your larger items including things like Christmas ornaments on this system and hoist it to your ceiling creating dramatic amounts of extra room.

Now of course as you set out to organize, keep in mind sporting equipment racks should be kept at the level of your children. If you do have children you should look for a free standing bike rack where children can easily get their bike in and out and not pick a ceiling model that is difficult for them to get out or put in. Making it simple will encourage your family to keep the garage clutter free.
